Steve Elm (Oneida), former artistic director of Amerinda Theater, has worked in the arts on both sides of the Atlantic. Trained at London’s Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama, Mr. Elm has appeared as an actor in film, television and on the stage. As a playwright and director he has worked with London’s Fourplay Theater, University of Manchester (England), Chuka Lokoli Native Theater Ensemble, and American Indian Community House Youth Theater Project and Amerinda Theater. With Gloria Miguel of Spiderwoman Theater, he co wrote her solo piece, “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue” , which he directed at New York Theater Workshop La Mama, ETC., and the Freed Center in Ada, Ohio. Mr. Elm most recent work was as curator, facilitator and director of Ohio Northern University’s Ninth Annual International Theater Festival where, in conjunction with Amerinda Theater, he presented a program of contemporary Native theater featuring the work of playwrights Eric Gansworth and Vicki Ramirez. Steve has also served as Editor of Amerinda’s literary journal, Talking Stick. Currently, he is a freelance director and a Master Teacher at the Wolf Trap Institute for the Performing Arts, working with early learners and training teachers in drama and storytelling. In September Steve will join the New School of Northern Virginia as Director of Theater.
Steve will teach Drama and Performance, and direct the new Iktomi play, Iktómi Lečhála Tȟawíčutȟuŋ (Iktomi’s New Wife).
