LDL 341 Reading II

As a follow up on Reading 1 this course will offer students more in-depth knowledge in using reading as a method of learning and teaching a second language. The participants of this class will work on increasing their reading comprehension. They will also learn about various strategies for reading comprehension, such as the schema theory approach, as well as using reading comprehension as sociocognitive processing which view comprehension as a process that involves meaning negotiation among text, readers and teachers. This will involve brainstorming about the topic of the text, class discussion, semantic mapping, pre-reading questions, personalization, visual and contextual aids, post-reading and follow-up possibilities. The course will also discuss options of assessing reading ability and comprehension and the relationship between readings skills and general language competence. Students will be expected to give a microteaching presentation on usinsg a text for reading in classroom.
